History of Cub Scout Pack 1 in Sellersville
“Scouting began in Sellersville in 1931 with 25 year old John Gilbert as Cubmaster. John was an Eagle Scout and former member of Boy Scout Troop 1. The first group of boys was sponsored by the Sellersville community. Those Cub Scouts were: Robert Bacorn, Elmer Moyer, Thomas Harkness, Ray Hiltebeital, Josef Shall, Robert Souder, Arthur Strang, William Viets, Ed Day, Francis Donahue and Harold Schweiger.
By 1933, Pack 1 had grown to 19 scouts with Lawrence Bruzenenske as Cub master. S. Walter Smith became Cub master in 1936. Pack meetings were held at the school on Church Street, now the Sellersville Museum. The Sellersville Kiwanis Club sponsored the Pack in 1940. By 1944, Cubmaster Lloyd Hoagey had 30 scouts, 9 leaders and Sellersville’s first Den mother, Frances Rufe.
In 1945, 40 boys and 13 leaders were on the Pack Roster. The meetings were held at the Reformed Church on Green Street.
Henry Gutekunst, Wilson Yerk, Nevin Detweiler and Russel Dorn served as Cubmasters between 1954 and 1963. The Sellersville Lions Club became sponsor in 1977.
St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is the present chartering organization (sponsor) since 1979 with Cubmaster Richard Evans. Afterwards, Mike Gonet, Tom Bradbury, Vince Pischl, Rich Leeds and Ron Pforter served as Cubmasters until 1999. Joel Grove was the Cubmaster from 2000 to 2002 and is still currently the Charter Representative. Larry Smith took over the position of Cubmaster from 2002-2003.
Neil Yellen served as the Cubmaster from May 2003 until March 2009. Following him, and serving as the present Cubmaster is Richard Wilhelm. Walt Kramer is the current Assistant Cubmaster after assuming the role in 2010.”
All of our leadership, whom run our scouting programs; and, our committee members, whom manage our pack operations are volunteers. These volunteers are the parents or other family members of the scouts in our pack. These “volunteers” are also trained in their roles so as to deliver the best Scouting program possible.
There is one main requirement for all members of Pack 1.
It is the Cub Scout Motto: DO YOUR BEST!
